The interface

This article deals with the browser interface. It also introduces concepts and features to help you understand how works and how you can customise it to suit your unique needs.

For an in-depth look at the app interface for iOS and Android, see our Mobile and Tablet Help. Note: The app interface only applies to the portrait view of a tablet device. The landscape view follows the browser interface.

The main app interface is made up of three parts:

  • The left pane, which is primarily used for navigating through your list of active yack rooms.
  • The centre pane, which is where you see and interact with yack members and messages.
  • The right-hand pane, which is used to show posts and status notifiers in a timeline view. Desktop and Web App Interface Overview

The left pane: Navigation, and managing your experience

The left pane provides tools to allow you to control your experience. From here you can access your contacts book and account settings, set your status, set up conversations (rooms) and scroll through all yack rooms you belong to at any one time.

In the rooms list you are given specific information about each conversation. If the yack room belongs to a specific organization you’ll see it here, along with the number of members in this room, and the priority you have assigned to it. Each yack room also displays a plus icon that allows you to merge the room with the one you are currently looking at.

The room list is continually updated to reflect the activity in each conversation. Yack rooms with posts you have not yet read will always bubble to the top of the list, with rooms dropping down the list as they become less and less active.

A badge will tell you how many unread posts you have in each room, while a pointed finger will alert you to any nudges you have received.

At the bottom of the panel there is a button to allow you to create your own organization. You can learn more about organizations on our Pricing page.

The yack room pane

Specific yack rooms are displayed in the centre pane. This subdivides horizontally into three sections:

  • The yack header
  • The actual conversation
  • The message input

By default the header is shown in its full view with sections showing the name of the yack room, its members, and information about files that have been uploaded into it. Depending on how you are using the room, more sections can appear in the header. For example, if you have merged two or more rooms you’ll see a new section showing the rooms you’ve added and the colours that have been assigned to them.

You can minimise the header at any time by clicking on the room settings button (the three vertical dots to the right of the room name). This also provides you with access to many of the other ways in which you can interact with a room. These include changing the priority you have assigned to the room, adding members and leaving the room.

In full view, clicking on a member’s avatar will bring up a menu allowing you to interact directly with that user. In the conversation area, new posts will be added to the bottom, just above the message input box.

The timeline

The timeline allows you to scroll through all the posts in all your yack rooms in the order in which they were made. Click on the post to open the room and see it in context. The timeline also shows system notifications such as invitations to new rooms and new members of your organization.

The timeline can be minimised to remove clutter and allow extra space for the room pane.

The search tab allows you to find messages you have sent or received in your yack rooms. You can only search through conversations you are a member of.

As a member of an organization, lets you search through your transcribed messages to find what you were talking about in your video and audio calls. You are able to replay video streams directly from the search result to confirm what was said in context.
